Rodney the Chicken was a big, friendly, popular chicken. He had brown feathers and a very yellow beak. He also had lots and lots of animal friends. And every day, he laid a big egg.

Every day, he gave his big egg to one of his animal friends.

On one day, he gave his egg to his friend, Mr. Hippo.

He said, "Hello Mr. Hippo, here's a big egg for you. What will you do with it?"

"Thank you, Rodney", said Mr. Hippo. "I'm going to cook this egg to make scrambled eggs, and then I will eat it all up in one bite. OMP!"

"Oooh", said Rodney, "Sounds tasty! Enjoy."

The next day, he gave his big egg to Cheeky Monkey.

He said, "Hello Cheeky Monkey, here's a big egg for you. What will you do with it?"

"Oooh oooh oooh, aah ah aahh", said Cheeky Monkey. "I'm going to play catch with this egg! I'll climb up a tree, and throw the egg up in the air, and catch it again, and throw it again, and catch it, and throw it, and catch it, and throw it, and catch it, and throw it, and catch it..."

"Wow", said Rodney, "That could be fun. But remember to be careful not to drop the egg, because if it falls on the floor it might break!"

The next day, he gave his big egg to Mr. Lion.

He said, "Hello Mr. Lion, here's a big egg for you. What will you do with it?"

"ROOAAAR! Thank you, Rodney", said Mr. Lion. "I'm going to paint a picture on this egg."

"Oooh", said Rodney, "Very interesting! What will you paint?"

Mr. Lion said, "A picture of you, Rodney!"

"Wow", said Rodney, "I'm flattered. I look forward to seeing the result!"

The next day, he gave his big egg to Mrs. Owl.

He said, "Hello Mrs. Owl, here's a big egg for you. What will you do with it?"

"Twit twoooooo, Thank yoouuuu, Rodney", said Mrs. Owl. "I'm going to sit on it in my nest, keep it nice and warm and safe, and see if a little chicken hatches from it.

"Amazing", said Rodney, "Good luck."

The next day, he gave his big egg to Little Mouse.

He said, "Hello Little Mouse, here's a big egg for you. What will you do with it?"

"Squeak squeak squeak", said Little Mouse. "I'm going to cut it in half, and wear the shell on my head like a funny hat."

"Ha ha", said Rodney, "That's going to look funny and stylish. You'll have to show me a photo."

The next day, he gave his big egg to Ms. Goat.

He said, "Hello Ms. Goat, here's a big egg for you. What will you do with it?"

"Bleeeaaaaaat. Thanks, Rodney", said Ms. Goat. "I'm going to put the egg on the floor and kick it around, like playing football."

"Tee hee hee", said Rodney, "Have fun, remember not to kick it too hard or it might break."

The next day, Rodney couldn't lay an egg!

He realised that he couldn't lay an egg because he hadn't eaten enough food. But the problem was that there wasn't any more food in the chicken's house. So Rodney had to leave the chicken's house to go to the shops to buy more food.

Outside the chicken's house, he had to be very careful because outside the chicken's house there were foxes who prowled around, looking for chickens to eat! So, Rodney stepped out of his house, and started walking off the shops. But he had to be very careful, so before he crossed any roads, he had to look left and right, and all around, to make sure there were no foxes coming. Just like you have to make sure no cars are coming before you cross the road!

He was very careful nearly all the way to the shops, but when he was nearly there, he forgot to be careful, and he stepped out into the road without looking for foxes. All of a sudden, a big nasty fox appeared!

The fox was just about to pounce and eat Rodney, but Rodney saw him just in time. Rodney jumped into the air, and flapped his wings so the fox couldn't reach him. And as he flapped his wings, he laid a big egg!

A big egg came out of his bottom, and fell through the air. It fell through the air and hit the fox on the head.

It hurt the fox and the fox said "Ouch". He ran away all the way to his cave and he hid and he went to sleep.

Now, it was safe for Rodney to carry on to the shop. So he got a big trolley, filled it with lots of food, paid for the food at the checkout, and put it all into lots of bags.

He carried the bags of food home, being very careful not to bump into any foxes.

When he got back to the chicken's house, he cooked a big meal for all the chickens. They all sat down together and ate the big meal, and the chickens said "Thank you, Rodney, for cooking such a nice meal for us. Such brown feathers you have, such a yellow beak, and what a great cook you are. Long live Rodney the Chicken!" They were all very happy.

Now that he'd had enough food to eat, Rodney could go back to laying a big egg every day.
